For years I'd tell people about this, and no one would believe me. "It never happened. Just a bit of urban folklore," they would tell me. Or they would accuse me of making the whole thinge up. But it really happened, I tell you. And today is the 85th anniversary of the Great Molasses flood. If you're in the Back Bay, swing by the main branch of the BPL to see pictures.
I can imagine few things more horrifying than being caught in the path of a 15' tidal wave of molases. yech!


I had a gallon jug of fresh molasses blow up in my pantry once . . . not a pretty site. Based on that mess, the mess from the flood had to be horrible . . .

Now, imagine 2 million gallons of molasses. To make matters worse, temperatures soon returned to their January in Boston norm, and the molasses turned solid.

man, had never heard of that. then, i ran it by my mom (not born yet then, of course, but still - 'cause she grew up in the city too) and she hadn't heard of it either. crazy.
